Registration for athletes and volunteers

On most Mondays from October through June, Special Olympics LaSalle conducts its practices and games at Sandwich West Public School, 2055 Wyoming Street, LaSalle(just southeast of the intersection of Malden Road and Todd Lane. Potential athletes and their parents/guardians will be able to observe an actual practice session and see the fun and activity our athletes have on a weekly basis. Once their registration paperwork has been completed, the newcomers can join in the fun providing they have the proper gym attire.

Do you have to be a LaSalle resident to join?

The answer is no.  Currently, Essex County boasts 3 Special Olympic clubs, namely the Essex County Warriors, Windsor Special Olympics, and of course the LaSalle Spirit.  Athletes are encouraged to join the club closest to them which provides the type of sports they are looking for. It is alright to belong to more than one club, if your current club does not provide all of your sport needs. For example, LaSalle Spirit does not have a swimming program, but Essex county Warriors does.  You could compete in softball in LaSalle, and swim with the Essex group. If your town does not have a Special Olympics Club, LaSalle would be happy to have you.

Can your lower functioning son/daughter with an intellectual disability join the club?

The LaSalle Spirit Club currently has athletes with varying ability levels. Some are simply out for the fun and consider it a social event, while others are very competitive.

What costs are involved?

At this point there is no cost to join, but members will be expected to assist in occasional fundraisers to offset costs for the practice venues, equipment, tournaments, etc.   There have been discussions of a modest annual fee, but this has not been approved to date.

What do I have to do to register?

If  it is an athlete with Down Syndrome,  a signed physician’s document  regarding the results of an Atlanto-axial Instability  x-ray  will be required.
